Russell Williams, a former Colonel in the Canadian Forces, is a convicted rapist and killer. Prior to his arrest, he was in command of CFB Trenton, Canada's busiest and largest military airbase. In 2010, Williams was voted Newsmaker of the Year by Canadian journalists for his colossal fall from grace. His heinous actions shocked the nation as to how such a prominent pillar of military society could lead such a sadistic, deviant dual existence. His crime spree spread over three years beginning with the minor crime of break and enter in order to fuel his lingerie fetish, progressing to forcible confinement and sexual assault, and finally escalating to the rape and murders of Corporal Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd. On February 7, 2010, Williams was brought in for questioning by police, and following several hours of intense interrogation, he confessed. He was then arrested and charged wtih two counts of first-degree murder, along with other serious crimes. Williams was kept in custody until his trial in October 2010. Following his earlier confession, the police searched his home and found evidence of the lingerie fetish which was the beginning of his downward spiral out of control. In the months preceding his trial, police had enough evidence to connect him to his break-in sprees and charged him with 82 counts of break and entering. On October 18, 2010, Russell Williams pled guilty to all 88 charges against him and he was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment as well as additional sentences for the other assorted crimes he had committed. The Canadian military moved quickly following his sentencing; they burned his uniforms, revoked all his awards and decorations, stripped him of his rank, and even was as far as crushing and scrapping his car. Williams is currently serving his sentence in a maximum security prison in Quebec.
